The UK has been on the road to terminal decline for a long time, and it is mostly because of attitude. The British are unable to let go of nostalgia for an imaginary past, and thus fail to make adequate decisions for the present and the future. By failing to build sufficient housing stock, owning one's home is now beyond the reach of many. By pricing university education beyond the means of many, the UK has locked in decades of productivity decline. Thanks to Brexit, UK inflation is higher and GDP is lower than it would have been if the nation hadn't voted to commit national suicide, and some 500,000 reasonably well-paying jobs have gone forever - leaving only low-paid work in their place. Unfortunately, nearly every British person is habituated to failure, stagnation, and decline so it's impossible to see any remedy. Anyone with drive and capability simply leaves - as did I, decades ago.
