The USA, outside of major metropolitan areas, is intentionally designed to maximize use of automobiles. The motor companies and oil companies back in the 1920s and 1930s saw to that and we’re still living with the consequences. It’s a pipe dream to think that mass transit can work in much of the USA.
One thing that would reduce congestion and accidents and excess fuel consumption would be requiring Americans to learn how to drive more adequately, but that’s never going to happen. So the typical US wrist-draped-limply-over-the-steering-wheel-while-slouched-in-the-seat-while-texting mode of lurching optimistically from one near-miss to the next will continue, and so will the problems that go along with it.
