The USA was over the day Trump was elected. The details, while vaguely interesting for those who care about surface detail, are far less important than the fact that representative democracy has brought us to this point. Thanks to a system that lets absolutely anyone vote for absolutely anyone, no qualifications or demonstration of competence required, we have Trump, Brexit, Bolsonaro, Erdogan, Putin, Modi, AfD, PiS, Orban, Babis et al. This is not a US phenomenon; it’s a global phenomenon. Democracy always, as Plato pointed out 2,500 years ago, leads to tyranny. Always.
