The world spends around $40 billion on ice-cream every year and around $18 billion on facial cosmetics. Americans alone spend over $80 billion per year on cigarettes. Given these frivolous expenditures that do no one any good but do a great many a lot of harm, it's difficult to argue that $100 billion on a particle collider is "a waste of money."
