There are so many naive arguments regarding the topic of education that it becomes quite wearying to keep abreast of the field. Regardless of one's personal predisposition, however, a few things seem clear. Firstly, our industrial-age approach to education is woefully mis-matched to contemporary needs. Secondly, almost no emphasis is placed on learning to think, but merely to repeat tropes that will enable one to pass exams. Thirdly, making education largely dependent upon the circumstances of one's birth is fantastically stupid as well as immoral. Fourthly, nothing much is ever going to change because there are far too many vested interests, from teachers' unions to right-wing politicians forever doing their masters' bidding and removing from all but the ultra-wealthy those things that civilized societies would ensure were within the reach of every citizen.
