There seems, throughout the article, to be an implicit assumption that jobs should be magically available for whoever wants them, regardless of their utility. While it is charming to imagine that academic achievement "ought" to guarantee a pleasant middle-class income, the reality is that we produce far too many Arts graduates with degrees that have limited utility. There are only a few job openings in academia each year; meanwhile engineers (for example) remain in short supply. Perhaps because I grew up in what used to be termed "third-world" countries I never imbibed the idea that society ought to ensure my satisfaction; consequently although I adore literature I acquired an education that enabled me to earn a living doing things other people actually are willing to pay me for. Only the wealthy can afford to "follow their dreams." Everyone else perforce must be far more pragmatic and far less naive.
