This was a very interesting article, Fiona. Thanks for writing it. From my perspective the most interesting thing about SARS-CoV2 is how our modern communications technologies have enabled mass conformity. We're hardwired by evolution to avoid thinking whenever possible (burns too many calories that used to be scarce) and opt into believing whatever we're told by purported authority figures instead. This made a lot of sense for 98% of our evolutionary history but now it's highly maladaptive. The mass media relies on generating endless irresponsible sensationalism in order to drive revenues but this is socially toxic. The media whips us into fear and panic, the politicians rush to be seen to be "doing something" and at no point is anyone actually thinking about anything, analyzing the essential data, and drawing reason-based conclusions. As the media has generated so much revenue from making what is in reality a fairly minor viral threat into looking like an existential crisis, it's clear we're in for a lot more of this kind of thing from now on. And because we're social animals, the majority of people in a group will act to impose conformity on others because it's uncomfortable for us when we see individuals not following the herd. These are, of course, ideal conditions for authoritarian regimes. While conspiracy theories are always absurd, ordinary human blind stupidity turns out to explain 99% of human behavior and 99.9% of human history. We are living in "interesting times."
