Time travel has a perpetual attraction largely because we don’t really understand the arrow of time. Physics says that the fundamental laws governing the universe (according to our current understanding) are time-symmetric yet our experience indicates a one-way flow. Until we understand why this appears to be the case we’ll continue to dream of time-travel because it’s presently an unbounded notion. Once we understand the arrow of time phenomenon more adequately I suspect our dreams of time travel will evaporate, just as few nowadays expect to be visited by ghosts or goblins or see apples floating magically upward when detached from the branch of a tree.
