Tinkering with representative democracy around the edges won't help. The problem is that representative democracy is a mistaken notion and unfit for purpose. It's striking that whereas we expect people to demonstrate competence before being permitted to undertake nearly every activity of significance, we require no demonstration of competence either of candidates or voters. This is one of the many systemic failings of our present system of governance.
