TTS is an awful concept, unless one simply doesn't care at all about human qualities when listening to something. TTS is acceptable for automobile navigation systems; it's entirely inappropriate for literature - or even Medium articles.

What would be useful would be to let authors narrate their own work. Listeners would disconnect from authors whose narration skills were sub-par, just as Medium readers stop reading an article when the author's writing skills are sub-par. There is absolutely no reason to use TTS on a site like Medium.
