Ukraine should have received at least 60 jets more than a year ago. As always, we're sending too little, far too late. Additionally, any sane analysis of Ukraine's combat environment would favor not the Gripen (because there are too few to be a viable contribution) but the F/A 18 (not the most recent versions, but the previous four blocks). This is far less sensitive, can operate from degraded airstrips, and has a more modular swap-out/swap-in architecture that makes maintenance far easier than the F-16. But as the USA is the only nation operating F/A 18s, and as Biden is perpetually terrified of anything that could potentially lead to escalation, there's zero probability of Ukraine getting the jets it really needs. We remain Putin's best hope of defeating Ukraine in the end.
