Unfortunately it’s not just foreign producers of shrimp who are over-using antibiotics and thus creating a future health catastrophe. US farmers have been throwing vast quantities of antibiotics into the food chain for decades; indeed, it’s nearly impossible to find beef, pork, or chicken in the USA that hasn’t been produced under conditions of massive antibiotic overload — with precisely the same results as with shrimp farming: multi-strain resistant bacteria. At some point in the next few years, millions of Americans will become violently ill from eating beef, chicken, or pork grown under US conditions and there will be no antibiotic that works, so a great many will die. But for now, who cares? That’s just the US way of life.
