Unfortunately most people in the West are in deep denial about the degree to which their own actions have been the result of Russian manipulation. Brexit voters are, like all simple-minded people, ignorant and generally incapable of responding coherently to facts such as much of the Brexit campaign was financed by Kremlin funds directed through Aaron Banks, a well-known ultra-right British businessman. In France, Marine LePen's party has been bankrolled by the Kremlin for several years, yet her supporters simply ignore this fact. Germany's politicians, journalists, and businessmen were all suborned in order to ensure energy dependence on Russia and hence Russian control over Germany foreign policy. Hungary's Orban is an overt fascist supporter of Putin and regularly ensures EU sanctions and other actions are blunted so as to provide maximum aid to Putin. The USA is incapable of acknowledging that the Republican Party is a law-ignoring fascist organization for which power at any price is the only guiding principle, and that has been thoroughly compromised by Russian connections.

So it's not really surprising that although Russia cannot succeed in Ukraine (which is not the same as losing), Putin nevertheless will have accomplished his primary aim, which is to render the West incapable of coherent sustained integrated action in any regard. Populism is easy to engender and once set in motion impossible to stop until everything lies in ruins.
