Unfortunately the human brain is hardwired to do as little thinking as possible, in consequence of the facts that (i) thinking consumes a lot of calories, and (ii) for most of our evolutionary history those calories needed to be conserved for running from predators or looking for food. The consequence is that most people rarely think at all, but merely repeat sound-bites and memes they’ve been fed. This is why the false choice works so well, and will always work so well. It’s why we have Brexit and Trump and all the other mistakes of modern civilization: they enable people to avoid thinking and instead feel good about “doing the right thing” by opting for the plastic container instead of the raccoon.
