Unfortunately the mass media long ago learned that the best way to grab eyeballs and thereby ensure healthy ad revenue is by sensation. So everything is sensationalized. That’s why I ignored the US media entirely during my 27 years in California and relied on subscription-based sources of news such as The Economist and l’Obs, which tend to be more measured in their reporting and provide far more context for each event they report. The US media, and sadly increasingly the British media too, are undermining society in the pursuit of revenue rather than being any sort of “fourth estate.”
