Unfortunately we’re hardwired for an environment that no longer exists: the small hunter-gatherer lifestyle on the African savannah. Our brains haven’t adapted in any way to the world we’ve accidentally created, in which complexity and global inter-connectedness far surpass our ability to grasp. And when we in the spoiled, pampered, and complacent West suddenly experience mild inconvenience we throw temper-tantrums, heedless of the fact that 95% of the world’s population has nothing compared to what we casually discard every single day. It’s not edifying, but sadly it’s human nature. Covid-19 has shown clearly that we panic at the slightest provocation, not least because the mass media relies on creating sensation in order to maintain its revenue streams. When we panic we are perfectly happy to condemn others to great suffering and death, all to protect our McSlop outlets, our comfortable sofas, our Netflix subscriptions, and our complacent self-centered lives.
