US citizens fondly imagine they live in “the land of the brave and the home of the free” whereas Europeans and others live in tyranny under kings and whatnot. The reality, of course, is very different. In Florida one needs 23 different certifications and authorizations in order to practice the highly skilled art of… hairdressing. The fact is that the US government has always been little more than an organization for creating bureaucracy that favors powerful vested interests. This is nothing new. Mark Twain famously observed, “America has the best government money can buy.” No wonder US citizens spend far more on basic healthcare than any other nation on the planet (in fact twice as much as the nearest-highest spending country) yet achieve outcomes near the bottom of the OECD.
