Very few of the hundreds of millions of species that have ever populated the Earth lasted more than 1 million years. As we've dead-ended ourselves through over-specialization (rather in the same way as have peacocks and koalas) it's not difficult to project our own extinction at some point in the next few hundred years. Unfortunately we will likely exterminate a great many other species before we go.
