We humans are far too stupid and obdurate ever to learn anything from history, so it's clear that wars will always be a factor of life somewhere around the world at any point in time. The question is: will we ever fight a global-scale war again? I rather suspect we will, once again not because of any cunning plan or grand conspiracy but for the usual reason: grotesque stupidity. Chinese ambitions will trigger a reaction, perhaps by India. Other nations will then pile in. Putin's Russia, desperate for some shred of national credibility, will see a chance to reimpose "order" on former USSR nations; the USA will be largely irrelevant until far too late, at which point it will simply become part of the problem. Fortunately for the UK, the self-harm inflicted by Brexit will ensure that no one wants to invade that gloomy little island; no one needs wet turnips.
