Why our continued passivity in the face of Russian aggression guarantees much more of Europe will soon be on the receiving end

While Western citizens distract themselves with triple cinnamon almond-milk lattes and gawp at whatever entertainments are currently fashionable, tens of thousands of people just like us are being slaughtered in Ukraine.

And we do nothing.

According to the media, we’re being wonderful for updating our Facebook profiles to show blue and yellow. According to the media, severe sanctions are hurting Putin’s ability to continue slaughtering women and children with impunity. And according to the media, plucky Ukrainians are bravely resisting wherever they can thanks to all the anti-tank missiles we’ve supposedly sent.

The reality, however, is rather different.

In Ukraine, Putin’s forces are operating essentially without meaningful opposition. Yes, some old armor has been destroyed and some Russian soldiers have been killed. Considering how little materiel the Ukrainians have at their disposal, this is a creditable record. But given the overwhelming force of the Russian invasion and its total lack of concern for human rights, the pinpricks inflicted by Ukraine on the Russian invaders are meaningless.
