We’re still at least 20 years away from fully autonomous vehicles, during which time legislation will creep forward in an incoherent manner. Meanwhile we’ll continue to occupy ourselves with irrelevant arguments over morality (“which should the vehicle prioritize?”) while ignoring the fact that any prioritization will be superior to the typical human reaction, which is to freeze and plow straight into whatever was ahead at the time of the incident. Humans are such atrocious drivers, with such poor skills and so little foresight that autonomous vehicles are our only hope for decreasing road traffic accidents. But that future is not “just around the corner” regardless of what charlatans like Musk may proclaim.
