When representative democracy delivered only the usual mediocre outcomes people could continue to imagine it was vaguely adequate as a system of governance. But today, with mindless populism sweeping the world and ordinary people voting in the most pathetically infantile charlatans and blustering idiots, it’s clear that representative democracy is long past its sell-by date. Let’s just hope that after the horrors that will sweep the globe in the next 30 years, the survivors look for far better approaches to governance. Approaches more capable of dealing with the complexities of a global inter-connected world far beyond the intellectual grasp of most citizens.
