Whenever people write about "society" conditioning people to do X or Y, I step back and wonder how "society" came to perform such a feat. Given that hundreds of thousands of years of selection pressures have shaped the human brain - and thus our behaviors - as much as they've shaped the rest of our physiology, there may be a less trite and more complex explanation. I suspect the situations depicted here could yield a more thoughtful analysis.
