While being mathematically lovely, string theory has the major problem of not corresponding to the reality we observe, nor in being able to make novel predictions that are testable. As such, it is not actually regarded by most physicists these days as a significant contender for a TOE but instead as a shimmering and beguiling intellectual dead-end.
