While I doubt we'll manage to exterminate ourselves entirely, it seems plausible to imagine that standard human cluelessness, carelessness, and folly, will ensure that some totally unnecessary catastrophe ensues before the end of this century, especially as mindless populism continues to sweep the world and blustering morons achieve high office.

It's amusing that people keep thinking AI is like a sci-fi movie; in reality AI is just pattern recognition. There is precisely no chance whatsoever of any AI program becoming "sentient" even if we could define what we mean by the word, which we can't. As always, people focus on entirely the wrong things and fail to see the obvious right underneath their noses. We'll kill ourselves because we're stupid, not because sci-fi computers will magically act like villains in third-rate Hollywood movies. There's as much chance of that as Voldemort cursing us all. E.g.: none at all.
