While I’m the first to admit my physics is pretty basic, I can’t help but wonder at the notion of a universal gravitational field that could have any meaningful strength given that gravity attenuates as the square of the distance from whatever mass is creating the spacetime curvature we call gravity (if we’re using GR) or is radiating gravitons (if we’re convinced by QFT). So “coupling” the drive to this extremely tenuous field wouldn’t seem to be a tremendously useful thing to do. Let’s wait and see what this experiment produces and how well it stands up to scrutiny before we get excited….
