While service may indeed yield personal benefits, the bigger picture is that the USA has rarely deployed its military assets to good purpose. It's impossible to consider any action post-Korea that hasn't been an unmitigated disaster, both from a strategic perspective and from a moral perspective.

Therefore it's hardly surprising that younger people should shun the military - why would anyone want to participate in a future train wreck?
