While the details are generally correct, for me the problem with the analysis presented in the article is the fact it is parochial. Once again, a US commentator fails to look beyond the USA and therefore fails to see the larger picture. Yes, the GoP is a neo-fascist organization dedicated to destroying the nation in pursuit of raw power. Yes, the USA's political system is utterly dysfunctional - along with pretty much every aspect of US life. But the question is how we got there. When we look around the world we see that populism is on the rise everywhere, fueled by the Internet's ability to spread simple-minded lies at lightspeed. Everywhere we look, ignorant foolish people are being duped into voting for self-destruction. The problem does not reside within the borders of any one nation, nor within a particular political Party. The problem is that representative democracy is a truly awful way to attempt governance and (as Plato rightly pointed out some 2,500 years ago) inevitably leads to tyranny. Tinkering around the edges of a fundamentally bad system may be amusing but it's not useful. Unfortunately, few seem willing to rethink our approach to governance and so it's not only the USA that's going down the drain; it's every nation. And in fact many have already gone under: most of Africa, most of south-east Asia, some of South America, and now an increasing number of European nations are teetering on the edge: Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, UK, Austria, and even France (where Marine Le Pen stands an exceedingly good chance of winning the presidency next year).
