While there is no shortage of bogus stories in circulation, it is also true that the mass media is highly selective in what it reports, the most important job in media being to protect revenue streams. Furthermore, as people all jump on a bandwagon, the media recognizes a must-cover sensation and so more and more "news" stories become about the same thing. The fact is, we have very little in the way of useful information and a very great deal of harmful nonsense. Sadly even supposedly reliable sources such as the BBC have succumbed to providing mental pablum for the masses. The idea that we should "trust journalists" is hopelessly naive - like saying we should trust politicians. Everyone has an agenda, and for most it's simply preserving their jobs and paychecks through doing whatever they need to do to keep it all going.
