Your article is excellent, but sadly Brexit is like any other religion: adopted without thought and once adopted forever after clung to with the fervor of the True Believer. Should the UK crash out of the EU with no deal, all the catastrophic consequences will be blamed by Brexiteers on the EU. They will continue, as has always been the case, to believe whatever they’re told by prancing posturing incompetents and ignore anything that looks like a real fact. Countless studies have shown that when our cherished beliefs and reality collide, we double down on our beliefs and deny reality exists. It’s difficult for us to remember today, but back in 1945 when Soviet troops were swarming through the ruin of Berlin there were still plenty of fervent Germans who were telling themselves it was all part of Hitler’s “master plan.” It will be no different in the wake of a post-Brexit meltdown.
